A mosaic of savannas covers much of Tanzania. The amount and timing of precipitation determine the type of savanna; Acacia savannas and grassland, Acacia/ Commiphora thornbush, Brachystegia and Julbernardia woodlands, Coastal forest and thickets, and Moist savanna/forest mosaic. These savannas support vast herds of ungulates and the largest annual land animal migration (Stuart 1990; Sinclair and Norton-Griffiths 1995).
